Tour Historic Downtown Charleston. South Carolina’s capital city is thriving with history, fine shopping and dining, arts, theater, outdoor and indoor family entertainment and more. There are numerous historic tours of historic downtown Charleston from guided tours to short, self-guided tours. No matter what option you choose, complete the experience with a Charleston’s famous carriage ride.
Fort Sumter. Visit the place where the Civil War began as the Confederates successfully took control of the fort in April of 1861. Visitors take a ferry to Fort Sumter where they can learn about America’s history, tour the carefully preserved grounds and artillery and even catch a re-enactment.
Middleton Place. This 18th-century rice plantation is home to America’s oldest manicured gardens which spans 65 acres. The large areas of grass encompass a wide variety of flowers, and statues and reflection pools and ponds of varying sizes. There is a museum inside the main house, working stableyards, and a restaurant, nursery and inn on-site.
Family Kingdom Amusement Park. This old-fashioned amusement park may not have as many or as large of rides as a contemporary amusement park, but it boasts more than 30 rides suitable for all ages that include a wooden roller coaster and the largest Ferris Wheel in the state.
Riley Waterfront Park. This relaxing park by the water offers views of boats going in and out of the harbor, spacious green lawns to sun bathe or have a barbeque or picnic, two large fountains where kids can cool off and wide walkways perfect for strolling or riding bikes.
Myrtle Beach State Park-A trip to South Carolina isn’t complete without a visit to Myrtle Beach. The state’s most popular beach features an iconic Ferris Wheel, and a bustling boardwalk with shops and restaurants. And of course, the beach, which is the most popular attraction of them all.
Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden. The Riverbanks Zoo is home to nearly 2,000 animals and the adjoining botanical gardens offer spectacular river and valley views, and remains of 19th-century textile buildings. The botanical gardens have more than 4,300 species of plants and offers living classrooms.
Hunting Island State Park. This state park offers RV and primitive tent camping, a pristine beach, boat ramp, hiking/walking trails, a visitor center and a 19th-century lighthouse that visitors can climb to the top of and see majestic views of the ocean, marshlands, and beach. Fishing, boating, and surfing are popular activities.
Spoleto Festival. This the largest festival in South Carolina and is one of the premier fine arts festivals in the U.S. The 17-day arts festival held during the beginning of summer and features more than 160 opera, theater, dance, chamber, symphonic, choral, and jazz music performances from both renowned and emerging performers and artists.
Boat Tour. There are a variety of boat tours available in Charleston, Hilton Head, North Myrtle Beach and Isle of Palms featuring elegant brunch and dinner cruises on luxury yachts, fun, family-friendly tours on restored sailing ships, and self-guided kayak and canoe tours. Many of the tours offer excellent viewings of the local wildlife including alligators, dolphins, otters, and birds.
